The number one question and concern I get asked about as a trainer and fat loss coach is how to get a trimmer tummy and lose stubborn belly fat.

As women, our midsections tend to take a beating – between growing babies in there, hormonal changes as we age, and a natural tendency to store fat there despite our best efforts, we get a little concerned with how to effectively manage that area of our bodies and feel confident that our time and efforts to stay trim don’t go to waste.

Personally, I struggled with a round belly most of my life. Even if I could lose some weight, my belly didn’t seem to want to disappear. It took me years to figure out what I was doing wrong.

And honestly, I am still no superstar fitness model with a shredded six-pack – but I have also learned that there is a huge difference between what the “ideal” looks like for me versus what is realistic and healthy for me.

So I come from a place of real-life, not a position of someone who has always had a lean tummy and has never struggled to change it or embrace the struggle of it. I am 42 years old and have given birth to three kids (now 15, 13, & 10), and I was a yo-yo dieter from age 15 – 35. I really enjoy good food and wine (and I don’t particularly love kale or chia, so there!), and I enjoy exercising – but I don’t love it THAT much, and I am busy with life, so I prefer do as little as possible. I am pretty much “normal” and even though I am a Personal Trainer and Fat Loss Coach, I don’t get a VIP exempt status from my belly preferring to be the main storage location for my fat cells.

So, I am one of you – that’s why I want to share with you real life strategies that actually work for normal women who are busy and are not necessarily genetically blessed with lean middles 🙂

I am not here to feed you unrealistic goals or advice that doesn’t work in real-life. In fact, real-life includes so many aspects that often aren’t even often considered in the belly-fat-equation, but are so crucial and necessary for us to create not only a physically fit body – but also a healthy mind and respect for our unique make-up and experience.

The mental game of understanding and accepting our bodies is a huge, yet overlooked, part of how we create healthy change.

Far too often, the conversation that happens in our minds (or even as part of the “advice” that’s out there) hinges on ideas that there is some level of  habit “perfection” that needs to be created in order to look a certain way or, in this case, get a flat tummy. We create strict rules around what the “perfect” diet or exercise program might look like, but from both my personal and professional experience, trying to create “perfect” sets us up for frustration and disappointment.

Chances are, if this area is a struggle for you, then its for good reason – and that’s not a bad thing…but what it does mean is that you have the opportunity to overcome that struggle by digging a little deeper into yourself to find better solutions what you’ve tried before. You have the opportunity to find a life-long formula that affords you both peace with your body and the chance at better overall health.

This is where the magic happens.
Because it doesn’t happen with a 30 day ab shred from a fitness magazine, or a 7-day juice cleanse, or by hating your body.

What’s different here is the road is paved with small steps that lead into a year-round, lifelong rhythm, with each step adding to your energy, motivation, and satisfaction with your self and your life.
